Carl E. Walker, 70, retired Deputy Fire Chief, of Milford, Maine, formerly of Westborough, died on Friday, July 4, 2008 at home. He was the husband of Linda F. (Morse) Walker.
Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late Everett and Beatrice (Creighton) Walker. He was a 1955 graduate of Westborough High School. He was also a graduate of Worcester Junior College receiving a degree in Electronic Engineering and a graduate of Quinsigamond College earning a degree in Fire Science. Carl served with the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959 as an electronics technician with the Pacific Fleet on board the U.S. Mt. Katmai. On May 1, 1965 Carl was appointed as a call firefighter, on June 1, 1971 he was appointed full time Lieutenant, on December 5, 1982 he was appointed Deputy Fire Chief, on November 17, 1989 he was appointed Staff Supervisor retiring on July 5, 2000. On July 1, 1976 Lieut. Carl Walker was appointed to head up the town's first Office for Fire Prevention. He also was appointed Westborough's Fire Alarm Superintendent. He was one of the town's first EMT's and was instrumental in the Fire Department starting the EMS and ambulance service. Carl also attended many programs at the Mass. Fire Academy. He was a member of the Massachusetts Fire Prevention Association and of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts Local 3070. Carl began a long lasting relationship between the Westborough Fire Department and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, conducting many fundraisers over the years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, enjoyed auto racing, snowmobiling and vacationing with his family. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Glen E. Walker and his wife, Jill, of Milford, ME; one daughter, Debra W. Andrade and her husband, Gualter, of Holden; two brothers, Richard Walker of Rochester, MA and John Walker of Leesburg, FL and six grandchildren, Alicia and Justin Andrade, Brianna, Andrew, Sarah and Ryan Walker. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 10:00 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church, 120 West Main St., Westborough. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours at the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough, are Friday, July 11, from 5 to 8 P.M.
