Jacqueline Irene (Day) Smith, 79, of Westborough, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester. She was the loving wife of David R. Smith, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage.
Born in Worcester, Jackie was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Anita C. (Wood) Day. Jackie graduated from North High School in Worcester in 1964 and Framingham State University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She began her teaching career at Forest Grove Middle School in Worcester. After raising her children, she returned to teaching at Gibbons Middle School in Westborough and ended her career at Westborough High School, retiring in 2008. She enjoyed teaching International Foods and Creative Cooking. Many of her students returned over the years to thank her for her cooking and life skills instruction. She later earned a Health Certification at Bridgewater State University and taught Health and Child Development. Mrs. Smith was proud to start Westborough Public School’s first preschool program.
Jackie was always known for her sense of humor, generosity, thoughtfulness, friendship, and amazing culinary skills. Over the years, she decorated many wedding cakes and desserts for special occasions. She was actively involved with her children's and grandchildren’s activities. She spent countless hours volunteering as a Girl Scout leader and parent group member. Jackie devoted her talents and time to many church committees and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was wonderful at flower arrangements and took great pride in decorating her home - especially for the holidays. Jackie treasured vacations on Cape Cod, shopping, reading, strong coffee, getting her nails and hair done, sending cards and goodie-filled care packages to loved ones, and spending time with friends and family.
She is survived by her children, Stephanie A. Trethaway and her husband James of Westford, Suzanne M. Conley and her husband Patrick of Sutton, Daniel R. Smith of Mexico and points beyond, her four grandchildren, Ryan and Caitlin Conley, and Lauren and Ella Trethaway, and sister, Judith Seale and her husband, Peter, of Connecticut.
Calling hours will be held in the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main Street, Westborough, on Wednesday, October 14th, from 4 to 7 P.M.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 15, at 10:00 A.M. in The Congregational Church of Westborough, 57 West Main St., Westborough, followed by burial at Pine Grove Cemetery in Westborough. Friends and family are invited to attend a luncheon back at The Congregational Church immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Rose Monahan Hospice, 10 Judith Rd., Worcester, MA 01602, or to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org
