John D. Field, Sr., 88, Chief Petty Officer, U. S. Navy (Ret.), of Clinton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Barbara E. (Thompson) Field.
Born in Southampton, NY he was the son of the late Herbert and Abigail (Edwards) Field. He was educated in New York schools and joined the U. S. Navy at the age of 17 where he served for the next twenty years retiring in 1966. Following his service in the Navy he was employed as an operating engineer for Harvard University retiring in 1984.
John enjoyed anything aviation related, made jewelry and canes, was an avid reader and a historian. He has been a resident of Clinton for nine years previously living in Gilford, NH. and Maynard, MA
He is survived by eight children, John Field, Jr., of Sanbornton, NH, Catherine Powers of New Bedford, Douglas Field of Clinton, Barbara Field of Derry, NH, Lynne Urso of Shrewsbury, James Field of Gilford, NH, Kimberly Field of Northfield, NH and Alison Schumacher of Gig Harbor, WA; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Cody Field.
His funeral service, with military honors, will be held on Friday, February 23, at 1:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon. There are no calling hours.
