Malinda St. Clair (Showalter) Lareau, 94, a long-time resident of Warren, Pennsylvania, died on October 25, 2019 in Rhode Island where she had been living for the last 7 years. She was born Sept. 16, 1925 in Snowden, Virginia to William Nathaniel Showalter and Lura Malinda (St. Clair) Showalter.
She answered to the name "Malinda" even after her discovery, at the age of 60, that her father had entered her legal name on the birth certificate as Alice Malinda Showalter, rather than Malinda St. Clair Showalter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Daniel Germain Lareau in 2002, and a son, Daniel Craig Lareau in 1962
She is survived by a brother, Robert Showalter, a World War II veteran; four sons: David Michael Lareau of Rhode Island, Richard Dennis Lareau and his wife, Nancy, of Massachusetts, Christopher Lawrence Lareau of Pennsylvania, and Lawrence Germain Lareau and his wife, Sofia, of California; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
While attending Mulligan College in Radford, Virginia, she went to a USO dance in Norfolk, Virginia. There, she met her husband, who claimed, when he saw her,"she stopped all the clocks". They were married on June 13, 1945 in Pensacola, Florida where he was stationed as a naval aviator.
Malinda somehow raised 5 wall-climbing, chandelier swinging boys while helping to put her husband through medical school, residency, private practice and yet another residency.
She moved to Warren, Pennsylvania with her family in 1967 and was active in golf, tennis, and community affairs as a President of the Woman's Club, and a long-time supporter of Holy Redeemer Parish. She enjoyed her hobbies of decoupage and needlepoint.
She will always be remembered for her joyous, unrestrained laughter, and her sometimes comical, but always charming, way of phrasing things.
