Marion Walters Cross, 102, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and the compassionate care of Gilchrest-Inova Hospice.
Born on September 6, 1924, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Marion Ballou Spencer and Isaac John Walters, Jr, She was a loving, nurturing older sister to her brother, Jack.
Marion attended Tufts University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945. In December 1947, she married Richard E. Cross, an officer in the Navy. Their life together took them abroad and across the country as a military family, with time spent in France, California, Guam, and Virginia.
Marion was a devoted homemaker, and she gave herself fully to her family. She was known for her good sense of humor and the steady warmth she brought to everyday life. She kept long-lasting friendships with childhood friends, a reflection of the loyalty and care that marked so many of her relationships.
She was especially devoted to her children and grandchildren, and she never missed an opportunity to support them. She attended her grandchildren’s sporting events and school award ceremonies, showing up faithfully for the moments that mattered to them.
Marion had simple pleasures that brought her joy throughout her life. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, music, especially Lawrence Welk, swimming, riding her bike, and playing Mahjong. She also had a habit of singing while doing housework, a small but memorable expression of her cheerful spirit. In her daily life, she brought music and lightness into ordinary routines.
Marion attended Episcopal church, and her life reflected the values of faith, family, and care for others.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Cross. She is lovingly remembered by her three children, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, along with all who were blessed to know her.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in the Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main Street, Westborough, MA. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Westborough.
