I first met Dottie Trainor in the spring of 1970, never thinking that she would become my mother-in-law for a decade and a half.
My own mother was a herald of doom, full of doleful prophecies of dangers she was sure her oldest son would fall prey to. "Do this", but mostly "Don't do that."
Dottie wasn't like that. No matter what her daughter Louise and I did, or when we came in, or how far we roamed, whether we were flush or broke, I can't recall a single time that Dottie was critical or belittling. She was always welcoming, more friend than parent.
Even after Louise and I parted ways, she was always glad to hear from me, recognizing my voice before I had a chance to tell her who was calling.
So fare you well, Dottie. If I behave myself, I'm sure you'll be there to welcome me on the other side.
